Choosing the best HEPA Vacuum Cleaner

A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtration vacuum cleaner is a necessary tool to minimize effects of allergens and other air pollutants inside. This is particularly important for people with allergies and / or conditions health such as asthma. The term HEPA is used to market a broad range of vacuum cleaners, and can sometimes be confusing.

"True" HEPA filter must capture a minimum of 99.97% of particles of one third of a micron in size. Most allergens are particles of 0.8 to 24 microns or even lower when disturbed. These particles are quite small, even compared to a human hair, which is about 10 micrometers thick.

Small particles can easily reach the deepest of the lungs and cause a wide range of negative effects on health, such as aggravated asthma, acute respiratory symptoms including aggravated coughing and painful or difficult breathing, eye / nose irritation / throat, respiratory infections and chronic bronchitis, decreased lung function, breathlessness and lung cancer.

"True" Filtration HEPA should not be confused with descriptions like "traps 10% dust mites, pollens of ragweed and common." The mites, including 125 micrometers on average, does not cause allergic reactions, but rather it is an allergen content in their faeces.

"True" HEPA vacuum cleaners must meet several stringent requirements: The machine must be "locked" and the HEPA filter DOP should be "tested" at a minimum "efficiency filters.

"Sealed" vacuum cleaners to use a gasket to seal against leakage of air flow between the engine cover and the tank. If the vacuum is not sealed, and a HEPA filter is added, then the airflow will take the path of least resistance, which is between the vacuum components and not through the dense HEPA filter.

DOP "Testing" brought a cloud of 0.3 micro-particles of diameter in the inlet side of the filter under test. To pass this test, not more than 0.03% of the particles observed in May leakage through the side exhaust filter.

The HEPA "Filter Efficiency" defines what percentage of what the size of the particles should be trapped in the HEPA filter and not exhausted.

To ensure that you use a "true" HEPA vacuum cleaner that will protect you, your family and your guests, choose a vacuum that is "locked" and "DOP Tested" at least 99.97% efficiency at 0.3 mics.
