Many people consider a room air cleaner to be an extravagant extra that is not really needed in a home unless you have spare cash or someone in your family with severe allergies. However, the simple truth is that everyone should have such a unit in their house at least in the most populated area of the home, because the number one place you ingest toxins and pollution from the air is inside your domicile. Many people believe that air pollution is only a problem outdoors, but the simple truth is that the air inside your home is probably more polluted than the outside air by almost double.

Unlike outside air which experiences constant wind and breezes, your home generally only receives ventilation during the summer and spring months and then gets shut up during the winter and fall months. Additionally, if you have a garage that is connected to your home, most likely the toxins from auto gases have leaked into your home as well. Unlike the outdoors, without a room air cleaner, they stay present in the air of your home because there is nowhere else they could go.

You will have to determine which one of these types of pollutants is most common in your home before you purchase a room air cleaner however, because most are designed to target either one or the other element. Thus, you have to decide rather you have more gas pollution or natural dirt and pollen pollution in your home, although you may consider purchasing a combination room air cleaner although it will be more costly.

You also need to be aware of how to use a purifier properly in order to get the cleanest air possible from it. For example, a room air cleaner is designed to only clean the air properly in one room, usually within 10 square feet. Thus, you cannot expect one room air cleaner to adequately keep the air throughout your home fresh. This is why many people purchase portable room air cleaner units so that they can be moved throughout the home as needed. Also, such purifier units work best if you combine their efforts with natural ventilation which is provided by opening the windows weather permitting.
