Tank Aquarium

It can be fun to create a fish tank aquarium, but as in any hobby it pays to do some research before you start. Before buying any fish you need to cycle the tank properly to ensure there are enough bacteria to cope with waste produced by your fish. We recommend a method of fishless cycling detailed below.

The choice of the tank

Fish aquarium tank can be purchased in glass or acrylic. Glass tanks are less expensive, heavier and sometimes spring leaks. Acrylic tanks are more expensive, rarely leak, come in a variety of forms, but not scratch easily. Acrylic tanks generally last longer than glass tanks.

Fish Tank Shape

Acrylic tanks come in a variety of shapes including cylinders, hexagon, octagon, round and the traditional rectangular shape. There are also wall tanks and tank coffee table. The traditional rectangular shape is always the best while the volume of water to a total area of up giving good gas exchange. For other forms, with a smaller volume of water to surface area ratio, maintenance will be higher and more frequent water changes are necessary.

In general buy the largest tank that will fit where you place and you can afford. A larger tank requires less maintenance and you can take in more fish without risking overcrowding.

Fishless cycling method

Requirements

Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate test strips test

Culture of bacteria from one tank set – this can be a filter material or gravel

Or, use a preparation Trade like Colonize by Dr. Foster & Smith or BioSpa by Marineland
Unscented ammonia

Method

After adding culture of bacteria in your newly created reservoir add 5 drops of ammonia to ten liters of water. Test for ammonia. If records nothing to add a few drops until you get a reading. Continue to add the same amount every day until you can detect nitrites in the tank. Now add half the quantity of ammonia per day until the records nitrate test strip. To point, the nitrite levels should begin to decline. When they reach zero, the tank is cycling. Do not change water 30% and you're ready for your fish.

Carefully inspect the fish tanks at the pet store to ensure that the fish seem healthy and no dead fish were in tanks. Search the fish that you intend to buy carefully and check up their temperature and water quality. Tropical fish will require a temperature greater than goldfish. Some fish are relatively peaceful when young, but are raw when ripe. Tiger barbs are good examples of the latter.

Always avoid overcrowding. You need a bigger tank larger. For the angel fish, never use a smaller tank than ten gallons. After the purchase of introducing Never fish to a quarantine tank set up but in a separate tank for at least a week to ensure you do not bring the bodies disease in you tank.
