Wet Dry Vacuum

Whats the mechanical differences between a dry and wet/dry handheld vacuum?

I’m doing a project about vacuums and I understand how the large versions work but I was looking at handheld wet/dry vacuums and the only difference I can see is a foam divider between the fan and the dirt container.

Every vacuum cleaner needs a filter to prevent dust and small solid particles reaching the pump, but any filter will be quickly clogged by water or any other fluid. It is therefore essential for wet cleaners to incorporate a float valve to shut off the vacuum line when the reservoir is full. A handheld vacuum will not have much of a reservoir, but it still faces the same problem.
